In contrast to LDPE, HDPE is tougher and more opaque; clear bottles cannot be made from HDPE. This plastic can generally survive higher temperatures than LDPE (110° C/230° F continuously, 120° C/248° F for a short time), and it is best for water-based chemicals and compounds. This type of plastic is not recommended for packaging petroleum or solvent-based objects.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is one of the most widely made plastics. Used in a variety of consumer products, such as children’s toys and window blinds, it can take on a spectrum of bright, dense colors. Chemically and biologically resistant, PVC has been developed to withstand heat and strength without an increase in weight. PVC is generally recommended for products made with alcohols and oils.
Another of the most commonly used plastics, polystyrene (PS), in its purest form, is a colorless, hard plastic with limited flexibility. It is recommended for applications around heat, as it can withstand temperatures up to 82° C (180° F).
Polypropylene (PP) is a normally tough and flexible plastic that has a known resistance to material fatigue. Also resistant to corrosion and chemical leaching, the plastic can survive most forms of physical damage, including impact and freezing. PP is frequently used in the creation of food containers because of its high melting point – 160° C (320° F) – and it is recommended for items that are non-solvent based with packaging demands that require strong color clarity.
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is FDA-approved for all food types. Depending on its thickness, PET can be semi-rigid to rigid, and it is characteristically very lightweight. Because the plastic has an excellent oxygen and moisture barrier and a good solvent resistance, it also provides a long shelf life.
